7 Day Kilimanjaro Rongai Route — The Northern Approach

7 Days

Where we will go

  • Kilimanjaro

The Rongai Route is Kilimanjaro's most unique and most distinctive climbing experience — the only route approaching Africa's highest peak from the remote northern slopes near the Kenyan border, delivering a completely different and equally extraordinary mountain experience of quieter trails, drier conditions, excellent wildlife encounters in the northern forest, and stunning views across the vast Amboseli plains of Kenya from the summit.

Altitude: 1,950 m (gate) → 2,625 m (camp)

Distance: 7 km hiking Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours Meals: Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Simba Camp (2,625 m)

Transfer from Moshi northward toward the Kenyan border — a scenic 2-hour drive through the beautiful Kilimanjaro foothills and traditional Chagga farmland to the remote Rongai Gate (1,950 m). Complete registration and meet your guide and porter team before beginning the afternoon hike through the extraordinary northern montane forest — significantly drier and more open than the southern rainforest with excellent wildlife encounters including colobus monkeys and blue monkeys in the canopy above. Arrive at Simba Camp (2,625 m) for dinner and overnight with the first extraordinary views of Kilimanjaro's Kibo summit rising magnificently to the south.

Altitude: 2,625 m → 3,450 m

Distance: 8 km hiking Hiking Time: 4 to 5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Second Cave Camp (3,450 m)

A beautiful day ascending through the increasingly open heath and moorland zone — the northern forest gradually thinning into dramatic open heathland as altitude increases and the extraordinary scale of Kilimanjaro's massive volcanic bulk becomes increasingly apparent. The trail passes through the landmark First Cave before continuing to the excellent campsite at Second Cave (3,450 m) — with outstanding views northward across the vast Amboseli plains of Kenya stretching to the distant horizon.

Altitude: 3,450 m → 3,870 m

Distance: 7 km hiking Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Third Cave Camp (3,870 m)

A shorter acclimatization day ascending steadily through the dramatic upper moorland and lower alpine desert toward the extraordinary Third Cave Camp (3,870 m) — one of the finest and most dramatically situated campsites on the entire Rongai Route with breathtaking panoramic views of both Kibo and the extraordinary rocky spires of Mawenzi Peak to the east. The shorter hiking day allows maximum rest and acclimatization at this critical altitude before the final push to the summit base camp.

Altitude: 3,870 m → 4,750 m

Distance: 6 km hiking Hiking Time: 4 to 5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Early Dinner Overnight: School Hut / Kibo Camp (4,750 m)

A dramatic and increasingly demanding day ascending through the stark alpine desert zone — vegetation disappearing almost entirely as the trail crosses the exposed upper northern slopes with extraordinary views of Kilimanjaro's massive northern ice fields glittering above. Arrive at the School Hut / Kibo Camp (4,750 m) — the highest camp on the Rongai Route and the launch point for tomorrow's summit push — for an early dinner at 5:00 PM and critical rest before the midnight departure.

Altitude: 4,750 m → 5,895 m (Uhuru) → 3,720 m (Horombo)

Distance: 18 km hiking Hiking Time: 7 to 8 hours ascent + 5 hours descent Meals: Midnight snack, Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Horombo Huts (3,720 m)

Midnight departure (11:30 PM) — the most extraordinary and most demanding day begins in complete darkness as your guide leads the steady "pole pole" ascent up the dramatic northern slopes toward Gilman's Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim — approaching from the north for a completely different and equally spectacular summit experience. The first extraordinary pre-dawn light illuminates the vast Kenyan plains far to the north as you reach Gilman's Point before the final triumphant push westward along the crater rim to the legendary Uhuru Peak (5,895 m).

Standing on the Roof of Africa as the full African sunrise blazes across the horizon — with the extraordinary panorama of both Tanzania and Kenya stretching far below — is one of the most breathtaking and most emotionally powerful moments of your entire life. Descend via the Marangu Route trail to Horombo Huts (3,720 m) for a well-earned overnight.

Altitude: 3,720 m → 1,843 m

Distance: 20 km hiking Hiking Time: 5 to 7 hours Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Overnight: N/A — return to Moshi

Final descent via the Marangu Route through the beautiful southeastern rainforest — a completely different and equally wonderful forest experience from the northern approach — to the Marangu Gate (1,843 m) where your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate is proudly presented. Transfer back to Moshi for a celebratory lunch and the beginning of your well-earned recovery — arriving as a proud Kilimanjaro summiteer.
