8 Day Kilimanjaro Shira Route — The High Altitude Start

8 Days

Where we will go

  • Kilimanjaro

The Shira Route is one of Mount Kilimanjaro's most distinctive and most dramatic climbing experiences — beginning at one of the highest starting points of any route on the mountain at the spectacular Shira Plateau and delivering an extraordinary eight-day journey through Kilimanjaro's most diverse and most beautiful high-altitude landscapes to the legendary Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres — a uniquely challenging and uniquely rewarding Kilimanjaro adventure for experienced high-altitude trekkers seeking a completely different mountain perspective.

Altitude: 2,100 m (gate) → 2,650 m (camp)

Distance: 5 km hiking Hiking Time: 2 to 3 hours Meals: Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Forest Camp (2,650 m)

Transfer from Moshi to the remote Londorossi Gate (2,100 m) on Kilimanjaro's western slopes for registration and team introduction. A short afternoon hike through the pristine western montane rainforest — significantly less visited than the southeastern forests of the Marangu and Machame approaches — to Forest Camp (2,650 m). Dinner and overnight.

Altitude: 2,650 m → 3,500 m

Distance: 8 km hiking Hiking Time: 5 to 6 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m)

Ascending through the upper rainforest and into the extraordinary heath and moorland zone — the vegetation opening dramatically as the trail climbs onto the magnificent Shira Plateau for the first extraordinary panoramic views of the entire Kilimanjaro massif. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp (3,500 m) with breathtaking views across the plateau.

Altitude: 3,500 m → 3,840 m

Distance: 9 km hiking Hiking Time: 4 to 5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m)

A spectacular day crossing the vast and beautiful Shira Plateau — ancient volcanic rock, sparse alpine vegetation, and breathtaking panoramic views of Kibo's summit cone rising magnificently above the plateau. Arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,840 m) with extraordinary sunset views over the vast western plains far below.

Altitude: 3,840 m → 4,600 m (Lava Tower) → 4,200 m (Moir Hut)

Distance: 10 km hiking Hiking Time: 6 to 7 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Moir Hut Camp (4,200 m)

The critical acclimatization day — ascending to the dramatic Lava Tower (4,600 m) before descending to Moir Hut Camp (4,200 m) — the gateway to the Northern Circuit's extraordinary remote northern traverse. This is where the Northern Circuit dramatically diverges from all other Kilimanjaro routes — instead of descending to Barranco the trail continues northward into the remote and rarely visited northern wilderness.

Altitude: 4,200 m → 4,020 m

Distance: 10 km hiking Hiking Time: 5 to 6 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Buffalo Camp (4,020 m)

The most extraordinary and most exclusive day of the entire route — beginning the dramatic traverse of Kilimanjaro's remote northern slopes — landscapes of breathtaking beauty, extraordinary geological drama, and absolute wilderness solitude that the vast majority of Kilimanjaro climbers never experience. The northern traverse crosses ancient lava flows, dramatic moorland ridges, and extraordinary alpine desert landscapes with constantly spectacular views of the northern ice fields glittering above and the vast Kenyan Amboseli plains stretching to the horizon far to the north. Arrive at the remote and beautifully situated Buffalo Camp (4,020 m) — one of the most dramatically positioned camps on the entire mountain.

Altitude: 4,020 m → 3,870 m

Distance: 9 km hiking Hiking Time: 4 to 5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Third Cave Camp (3,870 m)

Continuing the extraordinary northern traverse — the trail descending slightly through dramatic northern moorland and alpine desert landscapes with extraordinary views of Kilimanjaro's massive northern summit cone rising dramatically above and the vast African wilderness stretching in every direction. Arrive at Third Cave Camp (3,870 m) — shared with the Rongai Route — for dinner and overnight.

Altitude: 3,870 m → 4,750 m → 4,673 m

Distance: 12 km hiking Hiking Time: 6 to 7 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

The final approach to the summit base — ascending steeply through the dramatic alpine desert past School Hut (4,750 m) before traversing across the upper mountain to Barafu Base Camp (4,673 m) — the main summit launch point shared by the Machame, Lemosho, and Northern Circuit routes. After ten extraordinary days of mountain traversing the summit is finally within reach. Early dinner and rest before the midnight departure.

Altitude: 4,673 m → 5,895 m (Uhuru) → 3,100 m (Mweka)

Distance: 17 km hiking Hiking Time: 7 to 8 hours ascent + 4 to 5 hours descent Meals: Midnight snack, Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

Midnight departure (11:30 PM) — after the extraordinary journey of the Northern Circuit the summit push feels like the culmination of a truly epic mountain adventure. The steady "pole pole" ascent through the arctic zone leads to Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim — where the first breathtaking pre-dawn light illuminates the extraordinary panorama of the entire circuit you have just completed stretching below in every direction.

The final triumphant push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) as the full African sunrise blazes across the horizon — standing on the Roof of Africa after ten extraordinary days of mountain circumnavigation — is an achievement and an experience of genuinely overwhelming emotional power. Descent to Barafu for lunch before continuing to Mweka Camp (3,100 m).

Altitude: 3,100 m → 1,640 m

Distance: 10 km hiking Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Overnight: N/A — return to Moshi

Final descent through the beautiful montane rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640 m) where your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate is proudly presented. Transfer back to Moshi for a celebratory lunch — arriving as one of the very few people on Earth who have completed the extraordinary Kilimanjaro Northern Circuit — the most complete and most extraordinary Kilimanjaro climbing achievement available.
