7 Day Kilimanjaro Machame Route — The Whisky Route

7 Days

Where we will go

  • Kilimanjaro

Altitude: 1,800 m (gate) → 3,021 m (camp)

Distance: 11 km hiking Hiking Time: 5 to 7 hours Meals: Lunch, Dinner Overnight: Machame Camp (3,021 m)

Transfer from your Moshi hotel to Machame Gate (1,800 m) — the starting point of your extraordinary Kilimanjaro adventure — for registration, final equipment checks, and an introduction to your guide and porter team. Begin hiking through the beautiful and lush montane rainforest — a cool and misty world of ancient trees, hanging mosses, and extraordinary birdlife — ascending steadily through increasingly dramatic forest scenery to your first camp at Machame (3,021 m). Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp.

Altitude: 3,021 m → 3,840 m

Distance: 5 km hiking Hiking Time: 4 to 6 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Shira Camp (3,840 m)

A shorter but steadily ascending day through the extraordinary heath and moorland zone — the dense rainforest giving way to dramatic open heathland of giant heather, everlasting flowers, and the first extraordinary giant groundsel plants appearing on the ridge above. Reach the beautiful Shira Plateau — a vast and ancient volcanic plateau with breathtaking panoramic views across the Kilimanjaro massif — and descend gently to Shira Camp (3,840 m).

Altitude: 3,840 m → 4,600 m (Lava Tower) → 3,976 m (camp)

Distance: 10 km hiking Hiking Time: 6 to 8 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Barranco Camp (3,976 m)

The most important acclimatization day of the entire climb — ascending high to the dramatic Lava Tower (4,600 m) for lunch and acclimatization before descending to the lower Barranco Camp (3,976 m) — following the golden mountaineering principle of "climb high sleep low" that dramatically improves your body's altitude acclimatization and significantly increases your summit success rate. The landscape transforms dramatically through the extraordinary alpine desert zone with increasingly spectacular views of Kilimanjaro's dramatic southern glaciers.

Altitude: 3,976 m → 4,035 m

Distance: 5 km hiking Hiking Time: 4 to 5 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Karanga Camp (4,035 m)

The most exciting and most dramatic day of the Machame Route — beginning with the legendary Barranco Wall — a dramatic 257-metre near-vertical rock face that provides the most thrilling and most memorable scrambling section of the entire Kilimanjaro climb. Despite its intimidating appearance the Barranco Wall requires no technical climbing skills — our experienced guides lead every climber safely up the well-worn route with patience, encouragement, and expert guidance. The extraordinary views from the top of the wall across the Barranco valley and the southern Kilimanjaro glaciers are among the most spectacular of the entire climb. Continue across the dramatic alpine landscape to Karanga Camp (4,035 m).

Altitude: 4,035 m → 4,673 m

Distance: 4 km hiking Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Early Dinner Overnight: Barafu Camp (4,673 m)

A shorter day allowing maximum rest and recovery before the summit night push. Ascend steadily through the dramatic upper mountain landscape to Barafu Camp (4,673 m) — Kilimanjaro's main summit base camp — arriving in the early afternoon for a crucial rest period before dinner. Your guide conducts a detailed summit night briefing — final equipment check, headlamp batteries, summit clothing layers, hydration strategy, and the pace and approach for the midnight push to Uhuru Peak. Early dinner at 5:30 PM and lights out by 7:00 PM for maximum rest before the midnight departure.

Altitude: 4,673 m → 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak) → 3,100 m (Mweka Camp)

Distance: 17 km hiking Hiking Time: 7 to 8 hours ascent + 4 to 5 hours descent Meals: Midnight snack, Breakfast (summit), Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

Midnight departure (11:30 PM to 12:00 AM) — the most demanding, most extraordinary, and most life-changing day of the entire Kilimanjaro experience begins in complete darkness under the most brilliant star-filled sky imaginable.

The summit push follows the steep and rocky trail upward through the arctic summit zone in the darkness — your headlamp illuminating the path ahead as your guide maintains a steady and sustainable "pole pole" (slowly slowly) pace. The cold intensifies with altitude — temperatures regularly dropping to -10°C or below on summit night — as the trail steepens toward Stella Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim where the first extraordinary pre-dawn light begins to illuminate the horizon.

From Stella Point the final 45-minute push along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) — the highest point in Africa — as the African sun rises in a spectacular and deeply emotional dawn that rewards every step of the challenging journey with one of the most breathtaking and most unforgettable moments of your entire life.

Photographs at the Uhuru Peak summit sign, your guide's warm congratulations, and a deeply emotional moment of achievement at the Roof of Africa — before beginning the long descent through Barafu Camp for lunch and continuing to Mweka Camp (3,100 m) for a well-earned final overnight on the mountain.

Altitude: 3,100 m → 1,640 m (gate) Distance: 10 km hiking Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Overnight: N/A — return to Moshi

A final beautiful morning descent through the extraordinary montane rainforest — colobus monkeys in the canopy above and the extraordinary sounds of the forest surrounding you as you make your triumphant return to Mweka Gate (1,640 m) where your summit certificate is officially presented. Transfer back to your Moshi hotel for a celebratory lunch — arriving as a Kilimanjaro summiteer with extraordinary memories and a profound sense of personal achievement that will last a lifetime.
