10 Day Tanzania Southern Wonders — Wilderness, Wildflowers & Beach
Where we will go
- Mikumi National Park
- Selous Game Reserve
- Kitulo Plateau Area
- Zanzibar
Our 10 Day Tanzania Southern Wonders Safari is the most extraordinary and most diverse southern Tanzania experience available — a breathtaking ten-day journey combining the accessible wildlife of Mikumi National Park, the legendary boat safaris and wild dog encounters of the Selous Game Reserve, the spectacular wildflower plateau of Africa's Garden of God at Kitulo, and three blissful days of Indian Ocean paradise on the beautiful beaches of Zanzibar — four completely different and equally extraordinary Tanzania experiences in one perfectly crafted adventure.
Distance: 283 km — 3.5 to 4 hours
Meals: Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Mikumi area
Depart Dar es Salaam at 6:30 AM driving westward along the TANZAM highway through the beautiful coastal lowlands toward Mikumi National Park. Arrive early afternoon for an afternoon game drive through the famous Mkata floodplain — searching for lion, hippo pods, giraffe, zebra, elephant, buffalo, and wildebeest. Bush picnic lunch en route. Dinner and overnight at Mikumi camp or lodge.
Distance: 80 to 100 km within park
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Mikumi area
A full rewarding day exploring Mikumi National Park — Tanzania's most accessible southern park and one of its finest Big Five destinations. Dawn game drive across the famous Mkata floodplain — the best time for lion and predator encounters. Visit the extraordinary Mikumi hippo pools — dozens of hippos at very close range. Afternoon game drive through the park's diverse woodland habitats searching for leopard, wild dog, and 400+ bird species. Bush picnic lunch in the field. Sundowner stop before returning to camp for dinner.
Distance: 100 km — approximately 2 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Selous area
After breakfast depart Mikumi southeastward toward the vast wilderness of the Selous Game Reserve — arriving at the Selous in the late morning for a relaxed lunch at camp before an afternoon game drive through the extraordinary riverine forest and open woodland along the Rufiji River corridor. Search for elephant, lion, buffalo, leopard, hippo, and the first exciting signs of African wild dog territory. Dinner and overnight at your Selous riverside camp.
Distance: River & park exploration
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Selous area
The highlight of the Selous experience — a full extraordinary day combining Tanzania's most unique wildlife activity with outstanding game drives.
Morning — Rufiji River Boat Safari: Board your guided motorboat at dawn for a breathtaking 2 to 3 hour boat safari on the legendary Rufiji River — gliding silently through extraordinary waterways encountering enormous hippo pods, giant Nile crocodiles, fish eagles, and occasional elephant and buffalo at the water's edge in scenes of extraordinary African wilderness beauty.
Afternoon — Wild Dog & Game Drive: An afternoon game drive through the Selous's diverse habitats searching for the extraordinary African wild dog packs, lion prides, leopard, sable antelope, and greater kudu. Bush picnic lunch served riverside. Sundowner beside the Rufiji at sunset.
Distance: 620 km — approximately 8 to 9 hours via Iringa
Meals: Breakfast & Dinner Overnight: Mbeya / Kitulo area
An early 6:00 AM departure from the Selous for the long but scenic drive westward through Tanzania's extraordinary southern highlands — passing through Iringa for a lunch stop before continuing southward through increasingly dramatic highland scenery to the beautiful Southern Highlands around Mbeya. The landscape transforms dramatically as you ascend into the cool and misty highlands — lush green hills, tea and coffee plantations, and the first glimpses of the extraordinary Kitulo Plateau rising above the surrounding mountains. Arrive at your Kitulo area accommodation for dinner and overnight.
Distance: 30 to 40 km within plateau
Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Mbeya / Kitulo area
The most extraordinary and most unexpected day of the entire itinerary — a full day exploring the breathtaking high-altitude grassland wilderness of Kitulo Plateau National Park — Africa's first national park established primarily to protect its extraordinary floral heritage and one of the world's most remarkable and most beautiful wildflower destinations.
Morning — Wildflower & Orchid Walk: A guided walk across the magnificent plateau — an almost impossibly beautiful landscape of extraordinary wildflowers and rare orchids stretching as far as the eye can see. With 45 species of terrestrial orchid — the highest concentration in tropical Africa — alongside spectacular geraniums, gladiolus, aloe, protea, red hot pokers, and everlasting flowers the plateau creates one of Africa's most visually extraordinary and most photographically stunning natural spectacles.
Afternoon — Highland Birding & Ndumbi Peak: An afternoon of exceptional highland birdwatching searching for the critically endangered blue swallow — one of Africa's rarest birds breeding on Kitulo — alongside Denham's bustard, wattled crane, augur buzzard, and numerous endemic highland species. Optional hike to Ndumbi Peak for breathtaking panoramic views across the entire Southern Highlands plateau. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.
Distance: 800 km Kitulo to Dar + 1 hour flight
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Stone Town boutique hotel
An early 5:00 AM departure from Kitulo for the long drive back to Dar es Salaam — arriving at Julius Nyerere International Airport in the early afternoon for your scheduled flight to Zanzibar. The one-hour flight crosses the beautiful Tanzanian coastline and turquoise Zanzibar Channel delivering you to the enchanting Spice Island.
