Udzungwa Mountains National Park – Tanzania's Biodiversity Treasure
Udzungwa Mountains National Park is one of Tanzania’s most extraordinary and scientifically important national parks — a vast, ancient, and breathtakingly beautiful mountain wilderness that stands apart from every other national park in Tanzania in terms of its exceptional biodiversity, remarkable botanical richness, and unique ecological significance.Located in the Morogoro and Iringa Regions of southern Tanzania, the Udzungwa Mountains National Park covers 1,990 square kilometres of pristine and largely undisturbed montane rainforest, submontane forest, and miombo woodland — protecting one of the most biologically rich and ecologically important mountain ecosystems in all of Africa.
The Udzungwa Mountains are part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains — a chain of isolated mountain ranges stretching from southern Kenya to southern Tanzania that are recognized by conservation scientists as one of the world’s most important biodiversity hotspots. Formed over 30 million years ago and continuously forested for millions of years, the Eastern Arc Mountains have evolved an extraordinary concentration of endemic and unique species found nowhere else on Earth — earning them comparison with the Galapagos Islands in terms of their evolutionary and biological significance.Unlike most other Tanzanian national parks,
Udzungwa is primarily a hiking and trekking destination rather than a traditional game drive safari park — offering adventurous travelers a deeply rewarding and immersive wilderness experience of guided forest walks, spectacular waterfall hikes, exciting primate tracking, and breathtaking mountain scenery that is completely unique in the Tanzania safari landscape.
