Lake Natron – East Africa's Most Extraordinary Flamingo Destination
Lake Natron is one of Tanzania’s most remote, dramatic, and visually stunning destinations — a place unlike anywhere else on Earth. Located in the Arusha Region of northern Tanzania in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, this extraordinary alkaline lake sits at an elevation of 600 metres above sea level and stretches approximately 57 kilometres in length and 22 kilometres in width, covering a total area of around 1,040 square kilometres.
What makes Lake Natron truly unique is its extreme and inhospitable chemistry. Fed primarily by the Ewaso Ng’iro River and hot springs rich in sodium carbonate and other minerals, the lake maintains a highly alkaline pH level of up to 10.5 — almost as caustic as ammonia — and surface temperatures that can reach an astonishing 60°C in the shallower areas during the dry season
