5 Day Rubondo Island — Africa’s Most Extraordinary Island Safari
Where we will go
- Rubondo Island
- Lake Victoria
Our 5 Day Rubondo Island Safari is Tanzania's most exclusive and most extraordinary island wildlife experience — a breathtaking five-day fly-in adventure to the pristine forested island sanctuary of Rubondo National Park rising from the southwestern waters of Africa's largest lake — Lake Victoria — combining semi-wild chimpanzee tracking, world-class Nile perch sport fishing, exceptional shoebill stork birding, forest elephant encounters, and the extraordinary beauty of an untouched island wilderness that very few travelers ever experience.
Travel: Charter flight Arusha → Rubondo (~2 hours) + boat transfer Meals: Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Rubondo Island Camp
Depart Arusha Airport early morning on your exclusive charter flight to Rubondo Island — a beautiful two-hour flight over the extraordinary landscapes of northwestern Tanzania, the vast blue expanse of Lake Victoria gradually appearing on the western horizon as you descend toward Rubondo's small island airstrip.
On landing your Rubondo Island camp team welcomes you with a warm island greeting before a short boat transfer along the stunning forested shoreline to your camp. After a relaxed lunch enjoy an afternoon guided forest walk — your first extraordinary introduction to Rubondo's pristine ancient rainforest — spotting colobus monkeys, sitatunga, forest birds, and the first exciting signs of chimpanzee activity in the surrounding woodland. Sundowner drinks on the lake as the sun sets dramatically over the vast waters of Lake Victoria. Dinner and overnight at camp.
Distance: Forest tracking — 6 to 10 km hiking Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Rubondo Island Camp
Morning — Chimpanzee Tracking: The most extraordinary and most sought-after experience on Rubondo Island — an early morning guided chimpanzee tracking expedition through the island's dense ancient forest in search of Rubondo's remarkable semi-wild chimpanzee population — descended from 17 individuals introduced from European zoos between 1966 and 1969 and now numbering approximately 35 to 40 wild individuals.
Unlike the fully habituated chimps of Mahale and Gombe, Rubondo's chimpanzees are semi-wild — creating a genuinely thrilling and unpredictable tracking experience as your expert ranger guides follow fresh chimp signs, feeding evidence, and distant calls through the extraordinary forest. A successful encounter with these extraordinary animals in their pristine island forest habitat is one of the most exciting and most memorable wildlife experiences available anywhere in Tanzania.
Afternoon — Forest Elephant & Sitatunga Search: An afternoon guided walk through the forest and along the lake shore edges searching for forest elephants — Rubondo's most secretive and most rarely seen residents — and the beautiful sitatunga antelope — a semi-aquatic swamp dweller commonly encountered along the island's papyrus-fringed shores at dusk. Return to camp for a beautiful Lake Victoria sundowner before dinner.
Distance: Boat exploration — approximately 20 nautical miles Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Rubondo Island Camp
Morning — Shoebill Stork Search: An early morning guided birding expedition by boat into the extraordinary papyrus swamps surrounding Rubondo Island — searching for the legendary shoebill stork — one of Africa's most prehistoric-looking, most enigmatic, and most sought-after bird species. With its massive shoe-shaped bill, steely grey plumage, and extraordinary prehistoric appearance the shoebill is one of the ultimate prizes for birdwatchers visiting East Africa — and Rubondo Island is one of the most reliable and most accessible places in Tanzania to encounter this remarkable bird.
Additional birding highlights include the abundant African fish eagle, papyrus gonolek, grey crowned crane, African pygmy kingfisher, goliath heron, and the extraordinary African grey parrot — the introduced population providing one of Tanzania's most unexpected and most delightful bird sightings.
Afternoon — Lake Victoria Island Exploration: A beautiful guided boat trip around Rubondo Island's stunning forested shoreline and to nearby smaller islands and rocky outcrops — offering extraordinary birdwatching, wildlife viewing, and breathtaking scenic photography from the water's surface. The vast and beautiful expanse of Lake Victoria stretching to every horizon creates a maritime atmosphere completely unlike any other Tanzanian safari destination. Swimming and snorkeling in calm sheltered bays with colorful endemic cichlid fish visible in the crystal-clear shallows.
Distance: Fishing grounds — lake exploration Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Rubondo Island Camp
Morning — Nile Perch Sport Fishing: Rubondo Island is internationally renowned as one of Africa's finest sport fishing destinations — the pristine and largely unfished waters surrounding the island are home to some of the largest Nile perch in Lake Victoria with trophy fish regularly exceeding 50 to 100 kilograms in the waters around the island.
An exhilarating morning of guided Nile perch fishing by boat in the extraordinary Lake Victoria waters surrounding Rubondo — using trolling and spinning techniques from comfortable fishing boats with experienced local fishing guides who know the island's most productive fishing grounds intimately. All fishing at Rubondo is conducted on a strictly catch-and-release basis in accordance with national park conservation regulations. Even for non-fishing guests the extraordinary Lake Victoria scenery and wildlife encounters during the morning boat trip make this a memorable and rewarding experience.
Afternoon — Final Forest Walk & Birdwatching: A final relaxed afternoon guided forest walk through Rubondo's extraordinary ancient woodland — a last opportunity for chimpanzee signs, colobus monkey encounters, forest bird sightings, and the remarkable botanical diversity of this extraordinary island ecosystem. Farewell sundowner drinks on the lake shore as the extraordinary Lake Victoria sunset paints the vast water in breathtaking shades of gold and orange — a final perfect Rubondo evening before tomorrow's departure.
Travel: Boat transfer + charter flight Rubondo → Arusha (~2 hours) Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Overnight: N/A — return to Arusha
A final early morning walk along Rubondo's beautiful forested shoreline — watching the extraordinary Lake Victoria dawn with fish eagles calling and hippos surfacing in the morning mist — before packing and transferring by boat back to the island airstrip for your charter flight back to Arusha.
The return flight retraces your extraordinary outward journey over the vast blue expanse of Lake Victoria and the spectacular landscapes of northwestern Tanzania — arriving back in Arusha by early afternoon with extraordinary memories, outstanding wildlife photographs, and a profound appreciation for one of Africa's most unique and most extraordinary island wilderness destinations.
