6 Day Kilimanjaro Marangu Route — The Coca Cola Route
Where we will go
- Kilimanjaro
The Marangu Route — affectionately nicknamed the Coca Cola Route — is Mount Kilimanjaro's oldest, most established, and most comfortable climbing route offering the unique distinction of being the only route on the mountain with permanent dormitory hut accommodation throughout — making it the ideal Kilimanjaro experience for climbers seeking a more comfortable mountain adventure on Africa's highest and most iconic peak.
Altitude: 1,843 m (gate) → 2,720 m (huts)
Distance: 8 km hiking Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours Meals: Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Mandara Huts (2,720 m)
Transfer from Moshi to the historic Marangu Gate (1,843 m) — one of the most famous gateway points in all of African mountaineering — for registration and introduction to your guide and porter team. Begin hiking through the beautiful and lush montane rainforest — a cool world of ancient Podocarpus trees, hanging mosses, and excellent colobus monkey viewing — ascending steadily to your first overnight at the comfortable Mandara Huts (2,720 m). Dinner and overnight in the huts.
Altitude: 2,720 m → 3,720 m
Distance: 12 km hiking Hiking Time: 5 to 7 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Horombo Huts (3,720 m)
A longer and steadily ascending day through the extraordinary transition from dense montane forest to open heath and moorland — the vegetation changing dramatically as the altitude increases and the first spectacular views of Kilimanjaro's Kibo summit cone opening above. Pass through the famous Saddle — a dramatic open moorland plateau between the Kibo and Mawenzi volcanic cones — and arrive at the beautifully situated Horombo Huts (3,720 m) — one of the most scenic and most beloved camps on the entire mountain with extraordinary views of both Kibo and the dramatic rocky spires of Mawenzi.
Altitude: 3,720 m (rest & acclimatization walks)
Distance: Optional 4 to 6 km acclimatization hike Hiking Time: 2 to 4 hours optional Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Horombo Huts (3,720 m)
A critically important acclimatization rest day at Horombo — the key feature of the 6-day Marangu itinerary that significantly improves summit success rates compared to the standard 5-day option. Rest, hydrate, and allow your body the time it needs to begin adapting to the altitude.
Optional acclimatization hike to the extraordinary Mawenzi Tarn — a dramatic and beautiful alpine lake nestled beneath the spectacular rocky spires of Mawenzi Peak — providing excellent altitude acclimatization following the "climb high sleep low" principle while experiencing one of the most dramatic and most remote landscapes on the entire mountain. Return to Horombo for dinner and a second overnight — your body significantly better prepared for the summit push ahead.
Altitude: 3,720 m → 4,703 m
Distance: 10 km hiking Hiking Time: 5 to 6 hours Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Early Dinner Overnight: Kibo Huts (4,703 m)
A dramatic and increasingly demanding day ascending through the stark and extraordinary alpine desert zone — the vegetation disappearing almost entirely as the trail crosses the vast open Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi in an exposed and dramatic landscape of volcanic rock, loose scree, and breathtaking open skies. Arrive at the Kibo Huts (4,703 m) — the highest and most dramatically situated camp on the Marangu Route — perched directly beneath the imposing volcanic cone of Kibo with extraordinary views in every direction. Early dinner at 5:00 PM and rest by 6:30 PM before the midnight summit departure.
Altitude: 4,703 m → 5,895 m (Uhuru) → 3,720 m (Horombo)
Distance: 20 km hiking Hiking Time: 7 to 8 hours ascent + 5 to 6 hours descent Meals: Midnight snack, Breakfast (summit), Lunch & Dinner Overnight: Horombo Huts (3,720 m)
Midnight departure (11:00 PM) — the most demanding and most extraordinary day of the entire Marangu Route begins in complete darkness. The steep and rocky Hans Meyer Cave trail ascends relentlessly through the arctic zone — switchbacking up the volcanic scree in the darkness as temperatures plummet — toward Gilman's Point (5,756 m) on the crater rim where the first extraordinary pre-dawn light begins to illuminate the vast Kilimanjaro horizon.
From Gilman's Point the trail follows the stunning crater rim westward through knee-deep snow and ice — the breathtaking views into the massive summit crater below and across the vast African plains far beyond creating an overwhelming sense of altitude, achievement, and natural grandeur — to the legendary Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) where the African sunrise blazes in full magnificent glory as you stand on the highest point in all of Africa.
Photograph at the iconic Uhuru Peak summit sign, receive your guide's warm congratulations, and experience the most profound and most emotionally powerful moment of the entire climb — before beginning the long descent all the way back to Horombo Huts (3,720 m) for a well-earned final overnight.
Altitude: 3,720 m → 1,843 m
Distance: 20 km hiking Hiking Time: 5 to 7 hours Meals: Breakfast & Lunch Overnight: N/A — return to Moshi
A final beautiful descent through the magnificent moorland and rainforest — retracing the familiar trail back to Marangu Gate (1,843 m) where your official Kilimanjaro summit certificate is proudly presented at the gate registry. Transfer back to Moshi for a celebratory lunch — arriving as a proud Kilimanjaro summiteer with extraordinary memories and a personal achievement that will inspire you for the rest of your life.
